Last Day

Hello again! Today is our last day together as interns here at Town Hall. Together we've gone around the Town of Greenburgh gathering video interivews as part of the "Think Globally, Shop Locally" project. We've posted almost 30 videos on YouTube highlighting Greenburgh's local businesses. At the beginning of our internship working with Mr. Feiner we were hard pressed to find any business that was willing to be featured in an interview. Even with the help of Paul Feiner himself many businesses were still reluctant to join the campaign. However after a few weeks Anthony and I got better at speaking on our feet; introducing ourselves to the businesses and encouraging them to play a part in our campaign.

The interviews allow shoppers to get to know the stores in their community. They also portray genuine people who truly care about their community and believe their business is a fixture and true part of Greenburgh. Many businesses have taken advantage of our program and we have started to see a positive response from the community.

Josh and I also worked on a variety of projects for Mr. Feiner including a New Residents Reception, creating a blog (what you're reading right now), co-hosting on WVOX "The Greenburgh Report", and researching ways to restore the 9/11 memorial wall on Central Park Avenue. For the New Residents Reception we again went door to door looking for food donations for the dinner. We managed to collect Pizza, Pasta, Sliders, and plenty of bagels. For the radio show we got to interview a variety of people rangeing from the New York state Obama Campaign director, to solar rock bands, to puppetiers.

Finally we were able to create this blog which has cronicled everything we've done in the past 6 weeks. This blog has allowed us to connect with residents of Greenburgh, and publicise our message and goal for the "Think Globally, Shop Locally" initiative. Hopefully we've reached at least a few people and encouraged them to take advantage of the services and businesses in their community.

Thanks for reading,
Josh & Anthony

WVOX

Hey! Last week and this morning we joined Supervisor Feiner's radio show on WVOX 1460AM.

Last week we got to interview David Pollak, New York State Obama Campaign director and former chair of the democratic party in New York. It was really interesting to hear his take on Obama's victory and what elements came together to win. One of those elements was the involvement of younger people who were interested in politics and who played a big role in the campaign

We also spoke to the Puppets and Popcorn organizers who were planning an event in Hastings-on-Hudson.

Today Anthony and I joined Mr. Feiner again to interview an interesting band called Solar Punch, a band which uses solar energy to run their instruments, microphones, ect. We discussed how the green movement is effecting the new generation, what can be done to move the green movement along. Mr. Feiner invited Solar Punch to preform at a town meeting next week to show support for alternative energies.

Lastly we got to interview the creators of RivertownsGuide.com. This is a website designed to inform the public of upcoming events of any kind in Greenburgh such as music festivals, town meetings, even tag sales.
We had a great time doing the radio program and hopefully you'll hear us next week

Thanks,
The Interns

Heroes Deli & Catering

We stopped by heroes deli & catering today and they were happy to oblige us by doing an interview, however they had a history they wanted to share with their community as well:

Heroes Deli & Caterers has re-opened in the space formally occupied by the worn-out, tired looking "Wedge Deli." It's brand new and state of the art full line Deli which also now offers Authentic Jamaican Caribbean Cuisine to top it off.
The T-Bird, the classic sandwich made with chicken cutlet, American cheese, bacon, mayo, lettuce and tomato on a hero, is restored to first place on the menu. While others have imitated and tried to fill the void, the challenge was taken up by the new store owner, Johnny Catrini in February 2009. Catrini renewed everything in the store from top to bottom. Relying on twenty years experience in the restaurant business, he decided to install state of the art equipment, restoring the classic charm of the store when it was originally built decades ago.
Heroes Deli & Caterers is setup for fast everyday delivery and catering services to homes business and schools and offers rewards cards to their loyal customers for convenience and savings.

Epstein's Kosher Deli

This past Monday, Josh and I interviewed the owner of Epstein's Kosher Deli located at 387 Central Park Ave in Hartsdale. If you would like to contact the deli the number is (914) 428-5320. We had a brief (non-video) interview with the owner discussing the deli:

How long have you been open?
We've been in business for 40 years but the restaurant ownership changed recently this past year.

What type of food do you sell here?
We sell specialized Jewish & kosher food. Some of the most popular food's here are overstuffed Jewish sandwiches; pastrami, corn beef, ect.

Why should people come here?
We are one of the only kosher deli's in the area. We really care about the community, and we believe residents should have access to great kosher food. We also have outstanding service and great hospitality. We have enhanced the customer service since we took over the restaurant. Also we have high quality food and it can be served hot, and it's always fresh.

So be sure to visit Epstein's Kosher Deli at 387 Central Park Ave. Great food, great service

Co-Editor's

Hi, we're the intern's that are working for Paul Feiner and we will be taking care of this blog. We will periodically be posting Interview's, Blog entries, and photo's of our project "Think Globally, Shop Locally". The goal of this blog is to help promote local business and inform not only local merchants of our campaign, but also to encourage Greenburgh residents to shop locally.

I'm Anthony Schepis, I am a senior at Scarsdale High School. I'm going to Fordham University in the Fall, studying political science. I joined Supervisor Feiner to learn more about local government, as well as help struggling businesses during the recession. Hopefully, we will be able to get many more interviews to help out local merchants.

I'm Josh Ringel, I am currently a senior at Hastings High School. I will be attending the University at Albany in the Fall, studying public policy. I joined Supervisor Feiner to learn more about how local government works and how local government plays into the state government as a whole.

Think Globally, Shop Locally

Dear Local Business:

The Town of Greenburgh wants to help your local business succeed in this difficult economy. These are just a few action steps we plan to take:

1) We plan to create a business registry –a list of all businesses located in the town of Greenburgh. We will advise all businesses listed on the registry of all legislative initiatives that might impact you. In addition, we hope to create a business advisory committee. This committee will work with town officials –helping identify ways that the town can be more helpful.

2) We would like to create a link on our website (http://www.greenburghny.com/) to local business websites—helping you publicize your business.

3) The town will produce a very short FREE video that will be posted on the town website and on you tube of your business.

4) We will promote local businesses on public access TV ---interviewing businesses and highlighting the services you offer.

5) We will highlight different local businesses at different meetings of the Greenburgh Town Board –our board meetings are televised liveon the internet. That’s just for starter’s. Your suggestions are welcome ---your feedback will be considered.

Sincerely,
PAUL FEINER, Town Supervisor Judith Beville, Town Clerk Thomas Madden, Commissioner of Planning
